Garbage Disposal Not Working? Here’s How to Fix It
If your garbage disposal isn’t working, first check if it’s getting power by pressing the reset button on the bottom of the unit. If it hums but doesn’t spin, it’s likely jammed. If it’s completely silent, check the circuit breaker. Most garbage disposal problems are fixable in under 10 minutes without calling a plumber.
Quick Diagnosis: What’s Your Disposal Doing?
There are really only three symptoms, and each one points to a different fix:
- Completely dead (no sound) → Power issue. Check reset button, then circuit breaker.
- Humming but not spinning → Jammed. Something is stuck in the grinding chamber.
- Spinning but not draining → Drain clog, not a disposal problem.
Fix 1: The Reset Button
Every garbage disposal has a small red or black reset button on the bottom of the unit (under the sink). When the disposal overheats or overloads, this button trips like a mini circuit breaker.
What to do:
- Turn the disposal switch OFF
- Wait 5 minutes for the motor to cool
- Reach under the sink and press the reset button firmly until it clicks
- Run cold water, then flip the switch on
This fixes roughly 30% of “dead” disposals. If the button keeps tripping, you have a jam or a failing motor.
Fix 2: Unjam It with an Allen Wrench
If the disposal hums but doesn’t spin, something is wedged between the impellers and the grinding ring. Never stick your hand inside the disposal.
What to do:
- Turn the disposal switch OFF and unplug it (or shut off the breaker)
- Find the hex socket on the bottom center of the unit
- Insert a 1/4-inch Allen wrench (most disposals come with one; check the bottom of the unit or under the sink)
- Turn the wrench back and forth to manually rotate the impellers and free the jam
- Use tongs or pliers to remove whatever was stuck (usually a bone fragment, fruit pit, or utensil)
- Press the reset button, run cold water, and test
No Allen wrench? You can use a wooden broom handle inserted from the top to push the impellers, but the hex socket method is safer and more effective.
Fix 3: Check the Circuit Breaker
If the reset button doesn’t click and the disposal is completely silent, check your electrical panel. Look for a tripped breaker — it’ll be in the middle position between ON and OFF. Flip it fully OFF, then back ON.
If the breaker trips again immediately when you run the disposal, the motor is likely shorted. That’s a replacement, not a repair.
When to Replace vs. Repair
Garbage disposals last 8–12 years on average. Replace (don’t repair) if:
- The motor runs but grinding performance has dropped significantly
- It leaks from the bottom (seal failure — not economical to fix)
- The reset button trips constantly even after clearing jams
- It’s over 10 years old and making new noises
- You smell persistent odor even after cleaning
Repair if:
- It’s jammed (usually a one-time fix)
- The splash guard is worn (easy $5 replacement)
- It leaks from the top flange (can be re-sealed)
- The dishwasher connection is clogged (remove the knockout plug)
